Brian Byrne

Brian Byrne graduated from Trinity College in 1998, with a double Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Computer Science. He began his career as an Equity Trader with Boston-based hedge fund Navigator Asset Management. Brian traded individual equities, derivatives, futures, and fixed income products. In 2002, he joined Miller Tabak & Co., LLC’s Boston office as a hybrid Institutional Sales Trader and Trader. There, he covered hedge funds and mutual funds, while trading equities and listed options. From 2006 to 2008, Brian was tasked to improve business on the Program/Algorithmic & Electronic Trading desks, in the New York office. In 2008, Brian was promoted to Managing Director and Head of Equity Trading, managing 8 traders and support personnel, with responsibilities ranging from execution to operations.

Stephen Chmil joined Cornerstone Macro in June 2014 as a Sales Assistant.  During the summer of 2013, Stephen worked as a Capital Markets Summer Analyst at Shellpoint Partners assisting with the company’s first RMBS deal brought to market.  Stephen graduated from Brown University in 2014 with a BA in Economics.  While at Brown, Stephen was a member of the lacrosse team where he earned the Vincent Marinelli Award in 2010, given to the most valuable freshman.  Stephen also attended Chaminade High School, earning honor roll status all four years while also playing lacrosse and serving as a captain on the football team.

Courtney Bryan joined Cornerstone Macro in June 2014 as a Sales Assistant.  Prior to joining Cornerstone, Courtney spent two years at Merrill Lynch working as a Registered Client Associate for a Wealth Management Team.  Before Merrill Lynch, she spent a year volunteering and teaching at the Tanzanian Children’s Fund in Karatu, Tanzania.  Courtney graduated in 2010 from Lafayette College with a BA in Policy Studies and Minor in Art.

Worth, who most recently served as chief market technician and a managing director at Sterne Agee, has been voted either the number two or number three technical analyst on Institutional Investor’s All-America Research team in each of the past six years.  Prior to joining Sterne Agee, Carter Worth worked at Oppenheimer & Co and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Boston University.

Frank Moronski joined Cornerstone Macro in September of 2013 as the compliance officer. Prior to joining Cornerstone, Frank was at G & L Partners for 10 years where he was an equity trader and managed the compliance program. Frank started his financial career as an equity research associate with Bankers Trust Co and eventually joined Deutsche Bank as a trading assistant on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Frank currently holds the Series 7, 24, 55 and 63 licenses and is a graduate of Rutgers University.

Jason Glazer joined Cornerstone Macro in July 2014 as the Chief Operating Officer.  Prior to joining Cornerstone, Jason spent 1 ½ years at Cowen & Company where he was a Managing Director and Regional Manager for New York Hedge Fund Sales following their acquisition of Dahlman Rose.  Previously, Jason spent 6 years at Dahlman Rose as a Managing Partner where he was Co-Head of Equities & Head of Sales.  Jason spent 8 ½ years as a Managing Director at Bear Stearns, first as a healthcare sales specialist and then as a hedge-fund sales specialist.  Jason started his career at Eli Lilly & Company in Pharmaceutical Sales.  Jason graduated from Bucknell University with a BA in Economics & Political Science and has an MBA in Finance & International Business from New York University’s Stern School of Business; which includes a semester in European Management Studies at Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) Paris in Jouy-en-Josas, France.

Steve Killorin is the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer at Cornerstone Macro.  He is a Principal in the Firm and a member of the Executive Committee.  Prior to joining Cornerstone Macro in 2013, Steve was at International Strategy & Investment Group (“ISI”) for 12 years, where he was the CFO, CCO and a partner. Steve also held the CFO and CCO positions at ISI’s sister company, International Strategy & Investment Inc. (“ISI Inc.”), a registered investment adviser.  Previously, he was the Controller at Sanford Bernstein and was formerly at Deutsche Bank and Ernst & Young. Steve graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College in 1975.  He holds Series 7, 24, 27, 63 licenses and is a CPA.

William “Billy” Reilly graduated from Fairfield University in 1992, and joined Smith Barney, spending five years as an equity trader before the firm’s acquisition by Citigroup. Billy went on to trade multiple sectors at Citi including Financials, REITs, Technology, and Consumer/Retailers, over the next 10 years. Billy joined Weeden & Co. in 2008 as a generalist trader, and after two years transitioned into a salestrader role. He was instrumental in developing and servicing mutual funds, hedge funds, and pension funds. Most recently Billy was a salestrader at Concept Capital, and acted as an outsourced trader for several hedge funds with over $1 billion of assets under management. He was also a liaison to Concept’s prime brokerage division, capitalizing on his vast array of contacts.

Brian F. Knapp joined Cornerstone Macro as the firm’s Head of Equity Trading in April 2014. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Minor in Mathematics. During Brian’s five years of service in the United States Field Artillery, U.S. Army, he earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix in 1998. After completing his military service in 1999, he joined Solomon Smith Barney’s Associate Training Program, which gave him broad exposure across all areas of Equities and Fixed Income. Brian was selected to join the firm’s Equity Listed Trading desk and in 2004 was promoted to Senior Equity Trader to co-manage the Energy pad. In 2006, he joined JP Morgan responsible for trading and capital commitment of domestic Energy and Utility related equities (including MLP’s, midstream, coal, and tankers). Brian left JPM in 2009 to join Susquehanna International Group’s (SIG) Equity Trading desk focusing on Energy and Industrial Super Cyclical U.S. Sectors. He was promoted to Head Trader in the summer of 2012 to manage seven senior traders, and responsible for overseeing all daily operations of the SIG trading desk.

Five Obstacles To Active Management In The Era Of Uncertainty

It has been a difficult few years for investors. Both the long only and hedge fund community can attest to that. The reasons for this difficulty abound … but the central tendency of this underperformance has been the rotation out of the Great Moderation and into the Era of Uncertainty. We have been on the cyclical kick in 2016, but cannot denounce the bearishness of much of the investment community. There is no shortage of reasons to be bearish and thus we are not surprised by the myriad of client questions on “why isn’t the market going down?”

Investing in the Era of Uncertainty is all about risk management. Today’s report covers five of the biggest obstacles we see to investing over, potentially, the next decade. To be clear, we are big believers in active over passive management … just that we are at the precipice of a tectonic shift in the investing landscape. Understanding, and in turn, managing this new backdrop is not an insurmountable obstacle for investors. Markets and managers have always excelled at adapting to shifts in the investment landscape … this is more of an opportunity for those early adapters willing to embrace, and in turn, profit from this new era.
